BOATS OF BENGAL: A CATALOGUE

Last few years I am trying to replicate to the scale traditional wooden boat models. 2020 had given me ample time to devote myself to create such models. A catalogue named NOUKOGHAR I have prepared for easy access to all those boat models which are for SALE.
If you are interested, you can keep a copy of those lost traditions of Bengal Maritime and Riverine Heritage.

অনেক পরিশ্রম করে বিভিন্ন নৌকোর ছোট ছোট মডেল বানালাম।
বাংলার।

এই নদী বিধৌত ভূমির সাথে যার নিবিড় সম্পর্ক। হরেক রকমের মডেল গুলোর একটা সূচি তৈরি করলাম সকলের আগ্রহের জন্য। pdf এর লিংকটা ওপরে আর তাকেই ভিডিও ফাইলে নীচে দিলাম। যদি মনেহয় আপনার কাছে এই নৌকো আদরে থাকবে জানাতে দ্বিধা করবেন না। নৌকো হাতবদল হতেই পারে।

Dunga, a boat of Bengal

BOAT Model Name: Dunga / ডুঙ্গা

To-the-scale model ON SALE

Material: Wood and Metal
Dimension: 18 x 4.5 x 2 inches

Dunga, a flat bottom, shell built, stapled fishing boat of 10 to 12 feet in length with shallow draft is used in the river Subarnorekha of West Bengal. Double ended nails called jolui are used to fasten two planks side by side like staple pin. Stem and stern posts are shaped like fish head and fish tail respectively. Horizontal floor timbers are few in number and devoid off any cross beams.

ডুঙ্গা
সমতল তলা বিশিষ্ট মাছ ধরার নৌকো  ডুঙ্গা সুবর্ণরেখা নদীতে দেখতে পাওয়া যায়। খোল গড়নের এই নৌকোতে জলুই দিয়ে দুটো তক্তা জোড়া হয়। বাঁক, বরাসের সংখ্যা খুব কম হলেও কিন্তু কোনো গুঁড়ো থাকে না। ৮-১০ হাত লম্বা এই নৌকোর আকার অনেকটা মাছের মতো।

বেতনাই। বাংলার হারিয়ে ফেলা নৌকো। Betnai, a boat of Bengal

Betnai
Betnai, a shell built riverine cargo boat of Sundarbans. Carrying capacity ranges from 3000 to 4000 mounds. Length of the boat varies from 40 to 50 haat (one haat is approximately 18 inches in length). These boats used to carry timbers and leaves from Sundarbans. Essentially these boats used to propell by a single square sail. A triangular balanced rudder hanged from the starrboard side of the boat.

বেতনাই

সুন্দরবনের থেকে গোলপাতা আর কাঠ নিয়ে আসার জন্য ব্যাবহার হতো 40 থেকে 50 হাত লম্বা বিশেষ এই নৌকো। এই নৌকোর বিশেষত্ব হলো দু দিকের মাথার উঁচু ভাব। খোল গড়নের এই নৌকো অনেকটা চামচাকৃতির। চারকোনা পাল, লম্বা মাস্তুল আর তিনকোনা হাল এই নৌকোর গতি নির্ধারণ করে। বহন ক্ষমতা 3000 থেকে 5000 মন। সুন্দরবন থেকে গোলপাতা আর কাঠ এখন আর আনা যায় না। তাই হয়তো এই নৌকোর ব্যাবহারও বন্ধ।

Oldest form of transport made trough trial and error became technologically 'over developed'. A living tradition in this part of the world is dwindling. Documentation of intangible cultural heritage is inevitable for posterity. A to-the-scale model is but a humble effort of mine in this lockdown space given by Covid-19.

আদিমতম যান বিস্তর পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষার ফসল। এবং তা সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট সেই জায়গা আর সময়ের নিরিখে। প্রয়োজনের অভাবে আজ হারিয়ে যেতে বসেছে সেই বৈচিত্র। ভবিষ্যতের জন্য এই সংক্রান্ত তথ্য স্বযত্নে রক্ষায় এই প্রচেষ্টা। লকডাউনের সৃষ্টি।

Kaile Bachhari

A shell built long and narrow paddled racing boat of Bangladesh. Length of the boat can be 60 to 70 haat. Hundred paddlers can accommodated. The shape of the boat derived from a fish. Striking features are the long stem and stern heads with elaborate adornment. 

It can be assumed that this is also a warning of Bengal like CHHIP.

কাইলে বাছারী

নৌকা বাইচের নৌকো কাইলে বাছারী। মূলত বাংলাদেশের গোপালগঞ্জে এই জাতীয় নৌকো বাইচে যোগ দেয়। 60-70 হাত লম্বা এই নৌকোর মাথা আর পেছনের দিকের লম্বা কাঠ অনেকটা মাছের সুচালো মুখের মতো। 100 জন বাইচেল বৈঠা নিয়ে এই নৌকো নিয়ে বাইচ প্রতিযোগিতায় নামে।

নৌকোর গঠন, নৌকোর ব্যবহারের নিরিখে এ কথা বলাই যায় এই নৌকোও বাংলার রণতরী। মধ্যযুগের বাংলার নদী সংকুল দেশে নদী বেষ্টনী এই জাতীয় নৌকো দ্বারাই সুরক্ষিত থাকতো।

Chhip, a warboat of Bengal.

Chhip, a warboat. A long and narrow shell built, stapled boat can be 100 feet in length and only 2 to 3 feet in width.
100 paddlers along with other members can maneuver the boat very fast to reach the location.
Rangalal of Devichoudhurani (a novel by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay) used those boats. Now Chhips are exclusively used for boat race in rural Bengal.

বাংলার রণতরী। বাংলার নিজস্ব রীতিতে তৈরি ৭০-৮০ হাত লম্বা বৈঠার তালে দ্রুত পৌঁছে যেতে পারে গন্তব্যে।
দেবীর নির্দেশে রঙ্গলালের ইশারায় ৫০ জন সরকি, বল্লম নিয়ে এই নৌকো করেই হানা দিত। বর্তমানে নৌকো বাইচ এই ছিপই অংশ নেয় এই বাংলায়।
